Colloquial Words II

Using colloquial words that don't appear in textbooks can help you sound more like a native. On top of that, it can just be fun. Try using some of these with your Japanese friends and see what kind of reaction you get.

なんちゃって (nanchatte)
definition: just kidding, just joking
example: 今日の試験で、100点取ったんだよ。なんちゃって。 (kyou no shiken de, hyaku ten totta n da yo. nanchatte.)
meaning: I got 100% on the test today. Just kidding.

かっこいい (kakko ii)
definition: good looking, cool
example: 僕の新しい車、見た? かっこいいだろ? (boku no atarashii kuruma, mita? kakko ii daro?)
meaning: Did you see my new car? It's cool, isn't it?

ダサい (dasai)
definition: out of style, unhip, uncool
example: そんなダサいシャツを着て、どこ行くの? (sonna dasai shatsu o kite, doko iku no?)
meaning: Where are you going in that uncool shirt?

ぼろい (boroi)
definition: old, worn out, ragged
example: このテレビはぼろいから、新しいの買おう。 (kono terebi wa boroi kara, atarshii no kaou)
meaning: This T.V. is all worn out so let's buy a new one.

ちんする (chin suru) 'chin' comes from the ringing sound when the microwave stops
definition: to microwave [something]
example: 冷凍食品は便利だね。 ちんしたら、すぐ食べれるもんね。 (reitoushokuhin ha benri da ne. chin shitara, sugu tabereru mon ne.)
meaning: Frozen foods are convenient, aren't they? That's because you can eat right after microwaving them.
